Independent Study Shows TCO Improvements with JUNOS Implementation
Juniper Networks announced the results of a new study that reveals total cost of ownership (TCO) improvements in companies that have deployed JUNOS® Software, the network operating system that integrates routing, switching, security and network services. The study, conducted by Forrester Consulting, demonstrates that through the use of JUNOS Software and Juniper switches and routers, the companies studied achieved an overall reduction in operational costs for specific network operations tasks, including planning and provision, deployment, planned and unplanned network events.
Among other top-line results, the study reports a 41% reduction in overall network operations costs based on dollar savings across specific task categories: planned events, reduction in frequency and duration of unplanned network events, the sum of planned and unplanned events, the time needed to resolve unplanned network events and the “adding infrastructure” task.
Forrester used its deep research expertise in enterprise networking and its Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) methodology, which not only measures costs and cost reduction, but also weighs the enabling value of a technology in increasing the effectiveness of overall business processes. For this study, Forrester employed four fundamental elements of TEI in modeling JUNOS Software: costs and cost reduction; benefits to the entire organization; flexibility; and risk.
Based on interviews with customers, Forrester constructed a TEI framework for a composite organization and an associated ROI analysis to illustrate the areas of financial impact. Forrester identified a three-year risk-adjusted ROI of 63% associated with the deployment of Juniper switches and routers and JUNOS Software in an enterprise network, and positive financial payback within nine months.

Juniper Networks Outlines Vision and Strategy to Develop Next Generation Data Center Fabric
Legacy architectures constrain today’s data centers as they attempt to cope with the exponential increase in applications, servers, storage and network traffic.
By rethinking the network from the ground up, Juniper has created a long-term strategy to develop a single data center fabric with the flexibility and performance to scale to super data centers, while continuing to drive down the cost and complexity of managing the data center information infrastructure. This is based on Juniper’s vision for a Cloud Computing Infrastructure that enables operational innovation based on the ability to connect everything and empower everyone.
The leader in high-performance networking today reinforced its commitment to the data center by disclosing the existence of a program within the company to deliver the next generation data center fabric. The program, code-named the Stratus Project, represents an initiative to create a single data center fabric that will deliver a quantum jump in scale, performance and simplicity, with the flexibility to support fully converged and virtualized data center environments.
The Stratus Project, which has been underway for more than one year, was coined after the meteorological term ‘stratus,’ defined as a low-altitude, flat, single-layer cloud. The Project, initially inspired and led by Juniper’s CTO and Founder Pradeep Sindhu, now spans across multiple business groups and has resulted in more than 30 patent applications filed to date.

425 Can't Open Data Connection
When trying to ftp to a server using Internet browser.
Assuming you are using:

Problems:
When connecting to a FTP server using Internet Browser, FTP passive mode is being used. Check out here for details.
Usually it is due to the firewall.
To double confirm this, you can actually perform packet sniffing to see what is happening from the client side.
You can make use of Wireshark.

The following demonstrates a situation where passive mode is successful.

Check out here to figure out how to derive the port number from the syntax of (192,168.1.98,193,148)
The case below demonstrates that it is due to firewall problem because even though port 21 (control port) is opened, but the dynamic port for ftp passive mode is not opened through the firewall.
To double confirm this, turn off the firewall at the server side and try to perform FTP again.
Solution:
Assuming you are using Windows Firewall in Windows Server 2008.
By default setting, all outbound ports are opened.

So, the problem is actually the inbound port. By default, the port 21 is already opened in the Firewall. But this is not enough, because during passive mode, the client will communicate with the server via a dynamic port.
Check out the sniffing screen shots above.
Thus, you need to enable dynamic ports for FTP connection in the Firewall. But Windows Firewall don't have the option to let you configure inbound dynamic ports for FTP service.
Also, it doesn't allow you to configure a range of ports as well.
The solution is defined here or here.
which are..
Follow the instruction but do remember the followings:
These are what I typed to the command prompt.
To define a range of port for FTP passive mode.
and to open the range of port in Windows Firewall (without having to key in one by one)
This works!
If you check out Windows Firewall...

And also, you may want to do port forwarding for your router.

- IIS 6 (By default)

Juniper Networks Brings Virtualization to the Core with Industry’s Most Flexible Multi-chassis Routing System
Juniper Networks unveiled a matrix switch for interconnecting core routers into a higher density, more scalable system. The TX Matrix Plus is designed to enable service providers to unite up to 16 core routers into a single 25Tbps system. It can also work with the company’s Juniper Control System (JCS) 1200 to allow the virtualization of routing systems, networks and services to create efficiencies by consolidating networks, services and functionality, Juniper says. A virtualized core is one in which larger routers can be partitioned into multiple routers that might represent services (video traffic or corporate traffic) or network element types (aggregation or core nodes) and--most importantly--can if desired share resources such as interconnecting links and uplinks.
Service Providers today deliver applications through a large number of silo networks (e.g., separate networks for Internet, ATM, Enterprise, FR/ATM, voice, IPTV, VoD, etc.) Convergence of these silo networks to deliver all these services seamlessly has been a priority. However, there are questions about service availability, service consistency, service integrity and security. Virtualization in the core allows service providers to build one physical network, but still deliver all the above requirements. Another important factor is that the services mentioned, are delivered to different sets of customers by different administrative groups within the service provider organization. These groups need visibility, manageability of the network that delivers these revenue generating services. Virtualization delivers clear visibility and manageability to the groups that are responsible to deliver the services.
With huge growth in traffic driven by various factors especially video sites such as YouTube, Video on demand services such as Netflix and large amounts of user generated video traffic is being exchanged by users through applications such as Facebook. Enterprise high definition Video conferencing, Cloud Computing, SaaS etc. are other high bandwidth drivers. Also, with the advent of smart phones, which are nothing short of handheld computers, traffic generated by the wireless users is expected to grow exponentially.
A virtualized core helps service providers move extremely quickly in order to translate changing traffic and market factors into revenue in a timely fashion. These factors include an unpredictable rise in bandwidth, the need to monetize high-value content when it crosses multiple networks, and the ephemeral business models of content providers and network operators. The largest Tier-1 providers and providers of content worldwide are the Juniper customers who have requested IP/MPLS systems of the magnitude announced. The TX Matrix Plus will be available in the third quarter. The OTN interfaces will be available later this quarter. The TX Matrix Plus consists of Line Card Chassis and Switching Card Chassis. The Switch Card Chassis lists at US$300,00, but the price will be dependent on various system configurations and the number of LCC that need to be interconnected. The Line card chassis is a T1600 system, and pricing depends on the interfaces populated on the chassis.

2009 Trends in Networking and Security
As I am desperately seeking 1st quarter strategies for companies, David Gibson of Inter-Asia is kind enough to supply me with this comments Wan Ahmad Kamal, Country Manager, Juniper Networks Malaysia about trend in Networking and Security for 2009.

There are 7 key areas identified by Juniper Networks Malaysia.
All comments attributable to Wan Ahmad Kamal, Country Manager, Juniper Networks Malaysia.
This is a good insights into what Malaysia is expecting to see in 2009.

There are 7 key areas identified by Juniper Networks Malaysia.
- Next Generation Networking Internet Protocol (IP) Core and High Speed Broadband
“The 13-country Frost and Sullivan Asia-Pacific Broadband Access Technology and Market Comparison study released mid-year, showed the money to be made by telcos from offering broadband services to both corporate and home users. With a compound annual takeup subscription growth rate across the region, of 19.9%, revenues across Asia Pacific stood at US$28.1billion in 2007 and this is projected to reach $42billion by end-2013. Focused investment in HSBB (high speed broadband) in Malaysia via fibre-to-the-home and Ethernet-to-the-home with last-100 metres vDSL built on an end-to-end infrastructure for which Juniper Networks is set to provide the core network and other components, will further stimulate broadband demand and enhance national competitiveness. - Network and data centre consolidation and network virtualisation
“Network and data centre consolidation reached fever pitch in 2008. Organisations have been focusing on this as a key way to reduce operating expenditure but many networks are still far too complex. 2009 will see a shift in focus to look across the entire organisation and really address complexity. We’ve seen a number of customers look at cost and space savings available with this virtualisation technology in 2008. The challenge is getting server and network teams together to break down communication and education barriers to help businesses really streamline their data centres. 2009 will be the year that the network is the next to get the virtualisation treatment.” - Green Networking
“Beginning in 2008, 2009 is likely to see quantifiable metrics for efficiency and power consumption become a core element to RFPs (requests for proposals). To date it’s been a ‘nice to have’ with vague, unquantifiable goals. There are now testing standards (which Juniper is leading with testing vendor Ixia) that allow more rigorous demands to be placed around the green credentials for networking equipment.” - IPv6
“2008 saw an uptake in interest in IPv6, but only a few real implementations. As the number of available IPv4 addresses rapidly dwindles, 2009 may just be the year that the industry really starts to embrace IPv6. It’s not going to suddenly replace IPv4, but we’ll certainly see an increase in deployments as operators and companies look to future proof their networks.” - Network Operating systems
“Maximising network and server resources depends on using them more effectively and this needs proper management. The network operating system is a key way to achieve this and as such it is likely to emerge as a more important part of the buying decision in 2009. This will see new battles emerging among the main network vendors to differentiate and help customers reduce operating cost. It’s certainly an area that Juniper is making significant investment with JUNOS forming a core part of the business strategy.” - Network intelligence and policy control
“Companies are looking to leverage a lot more multiplay applications which will lead to an increasing mix of video, voice and data flowing over networks. Dealing with these multiple traffic types is certainly achievable with only modest networks - as long as they have enough intelligence built in. In 2009, the mechanism to achieve this level of intelligence, through advanced application aware networking, is likely to emerge as a key focus area for businesses.” - Network Security
“Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, environmental pressures and tighter budgets going into 2009 from 2008, investments in Network and Internet Security will continue. Recent events that unfolded in Mumbai & Bangkok raise focus on not just security and connectivity, but continued access to information and data. In this aspect, ICE (In-Case of Emergency) capabilities, disaster recovery and business continuity will be top of mind with many CIOs. In addition, some organizations will supplement that with identity management and access control to tighten their information security. Consolidation and virtualization will extend to security solutions in an effort to reduce security appliance sprawl and reduce costs in power and cooling in the data centre.”

Juniper Networks Positioned in Leaders Quadrant of Leading Analyst Firm’s Enterprise Network Firewalls Magic Quadrant
Juniper Networks, the leader in high-performance networking, announced that the company is positioned in the "Leaders" quadrant of Gartner's recently published Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls. The Leaders quadrant contains a mix of large and midsize vendors, with the common element of making products that are built for enterprise requirements: including a wide range of models, support for virtualization and virtual LANs, and management and reporting capability that is designed for complex and high-volume environments, such as multitier administration and rules/policy minimization.
Next-generation firewall capability is an important element as enterprises move away from having dedicated IPS appliances at their perimeter and remote locations. Vendors in this quadrant lead the market in offering new safeguarding features, providing expert capability rather than treating the firewall as a commodity and having a good track record of avoiding vulnerabilities in their security products. Common characteristics include handling the highest throughput with minimal performance loss and options for hardware acceleration.
"Our positioning in the 'Leaders' quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls as the greatest network firewall vendor among competitors with the strongest blend of price, management and performance demonstrates our continued leadership in high-performance network security," said Wan Ahmad Kamal, Country Manager of Juniper Networks Malaysia. "Juniper will continue to deliver innovative and comprehensive network security solutions that enable high-performance businesses to quickly and cost-effectively take advantage of new service opportunities, address changing business requirements and deliver superior user experiences."

Juniper Networks and IXIA Announce Telecom Energy Efficiency Metric
Juniper Networks, the leader in high-performance networking, and IXIA, a leading, global provider of IP performance test systems, today announced the formation of the Energy Consumption Rating (ECR) Initiative — a framework for measuring the energy efficiency of network and telecom devices. Juniper, Ixia and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs collaborated to develop the energy efficiency metric in response to increasing requirements from service providers, enterprise businesses and government agencies for better methods to estimate, project and regulate energy efficiency of telecom and network equipment.
The vendor-neutral ECR framework and methodology offers a turnkey solution for reporting, measuring and regulating network component energy efficiency. The ECR draft specification 1.02 establishes a framework for classifying network equipment and a methodology for measuring energy efficiency. The final "performance-per-energy unit" rating, expressed in (watts) / (Gigabit per second) can be reported as a peak (scalar) or synthetic (weighted) metric that takes dynamic energy management capabilities into account.
"Energy efficiency is an increasingly important factor in customers' decision and evaluation process, but to-date there has been no reliable, standardized method for testing the efficiency of networking equipment. The ECR Initiative is an important step toward making energy efficiency ratings for telecommunications a reality," said Wan Ahmad Kamal, Juniper Networks Malaysia Country Manager. "Our service provider customers are focused on energy efficiency for maximum operational savings, service quality, reliability and the environmental impact of their networks, and our products are designed to help them meet these objectives. By participating in the launch of the ECR Initiative, Juniper is not only helping advance the industry towards its efficiency goals, but is also validating the advantage Juniper's platforms such as the T1600 have in this area.""
The Juniper Networks T1600 Core Router was the first system to be tested (today) under the ECR, and has been verified as the industry's most energy-efficient core router, with a performance-per-energy unit rating of 9.1 watts per Gpbs. The tests were performed at Ixia's iSimCity in Santa Clara, California using its IxGreen energy measurement solution. The Juniper Networks T1600 is a core router that can deliver 25 percent more routing capacity at half the footprint and with up to 40 percent less power than competing solutions.
Press Release:
